ABOUT ME
Iván Chaar López is an assistant professor in Digital Studies in the Department of American Studies at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin. His research and teaching examine the history and politics of computing and information infrastructures, and their relation to racial formation. He is especially interested in the place of Latina/o/es as targets, users, and developers of digital lifeworlds. His first single-authored book, The Cybernetic Border: Drones, Technology, and Intrusion (Duke University Press, 2024), shows how US borders are more than instruments of blockage like walls or fences; since the mid-twentieth century they are recursive regimes of datafication and racialization. He is currently pursuing a second book project that examines the history and technopolitics of semiconductor assembly along the US-México borderlands since the 1960s. Chaar López' peer-reviewed work is published in American Quarterly, Social Studies of Science, Social Text, and Critical Ethnic Studies. His work has also appeared on The Guardian, Interactions (Magazine for Association for Computing Machinery), Politico, and Bloomberg Businessweek.
Chaar López is a member and co-founder of multiple research labs. At the University of Texas at Austin, he leads the Border Tech Lab. He co-leads a research collective at UT with Amelia Acker and Edgar Gómez-Cruz devoted to Assemblies of Technosolutionism. Chaar López was a co-founding member of the Precarity Lab at the University of Michigan with whom he co-wrote Technoprecarious (Goldsmiths Press, 2020).
His work has won multiple awards, grants, and fellowships. He was a Faculty Fellow at the Humanities Institute at UT from 2022-2024. Chaar López also won the 2022-2023 Ransom Faculty Fellowship from the College of Liberal Arts at UT. In 2020, he also won the Constance M. Rourke Prize for best article from the American Studies Association. Chaar López was awarded the Digital Studies Fellowship from the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress in 2015.
From 2018 to 2020, Chaar López was a Mellon Diversity Postdoctoral Associate in the Latina/o Studies Program and the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University. He received his PhD. in American Culture in 2018 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
